The 24-year-old imam of a Margate mosque who faces terrorism charges will not have a court-appointed public defender because a federal judge ruled he has too much money to qualify for one.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Barry Garber put Izhar Khan under oath and questioned him about his finances at a hearing Monday. Garber said the $28,000 the Muslim cleric said he has in the bank should be enough to pay for a private attorney.

Khan also told the judge he owns his North Lauderdale home, valued at about $70,000, and was paid more than $3,000 a month as imam of Masjid Jamaat Al Mu'mineen.
